P4P September Schedule

              hand out wish lists to customers and ask for donations as they shop the Collinsville store. There will

             also have a booth with adoptable dogs and info.

August 2012 Review

August was a busy month with 80 adoptions!  We had one after another sick dog-and I mean really sick.  Kurt was our miracle dog and survived parvo, pneumonia and liver failure.  His vet check was today and he looks great.  Daffodil was another with parvo and serious intestinal complications.  So far so good.  We had the puppy with the worst case of ringworm ever.  I think we had about 12 heartworm treatments.  Stevos' broken leg mended and he was adopted.  Yet another bladder stone surgery with ChiChi.  Yikes!  Our vet bills are thru the roof.

On Aug. 22, Norma Caraker donated her tips from waitressing at Sgt. Peppers in Edwardsville.  Much to our surprise she collected $1102.00 in tips to help the animals at our shelter. Way to go Norma!!  Jack and Jenny started the Barkley and Ali Fund to help the sick and injured animals at our shelter. Anyone can donate to the fund to help with our vet bills. You can donate thru PayPal on our website at www.partners4pets.petfinder.com.   You can also send a donation to our address, or call our vet, Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital at 618-344-7949 and make a payment directly to our bill.  

Our first low cost spay/neuter clinic was August 25 and 26 with the OpSPOT mobile unit in Granite City at the Americas Port.  The clinic was made possible through a targeted spay/neuter grant with PetSmart Charities.  Partners For Pets, OpSPOT and SNIP Alliance are all working together to bring this much needed service to the GC area.  This weekend we spayed and neutered 57 pets!!!!!  Amazing what you can accomplish when everyone works together.

A lot of very nice work has been done at the shelter in the last month or so.  Dominick must have read my mind and fixed the hose holder and put a metal plate between the gate so the little dogs couldn't get through.  He made new crates to hold the newspaper, put up some shelves and metal sheets between the pens to cut down on the barking to name just a few things.  Bill fixed the door, put in a gate between the dog runs, put up more metal plates and they have been working on the shed to straighten it up.  Todd put 12 tons of new chip rock out in the dog yard.  It was really hot.  He also fixed that draining AC that was making the dog run wet and yucky and now it drains out of the pen.  I'm sure I missed some things fixed but to say the least-Thank you!

Barb, Danette and Sarah are doing a great job with the care of the animals in the shelter.  The dogs and cats are very happy.  With all the sick animals and adoptions Nev has been going non-stop taking care of the vet runs and getting everyone ready for adoption.  It takes a huge amount of work to get an animal from the pound ready so it can be adopted.  All the care, paperwork, phone calls, laundry, supply ordering, etc that it takes to keep the shelter going is amazing.  To get an animal from the pound to adoptions takes a lot of teamwork and gigantic effort from a lot of people.  I will have to do a story on all the people that make P4P possible.  I think you would be amazed at the number of people that work to help the animals at the shelter.

June Medical Disasters/Miracles

   June has been a busy month.  P4P had lots of dogs and cats with medical problems.  It started out with Frank.  Got a call from MCAC that a coonhound was there and injured.  Could we come and get him. Even though he couldn't use his front leg Frank was very happy to go with me.  Xrays confirmed he had been shot and the front leg broken.  Dr. Ervin fixed Frank and then adopted him! He is recouperating with Dr. E and family. Cost of surgery: $1100.00

   Next was Nala the kitty.  A very nice person saw her with a collar around the top part of her chest right under her front legs.  The collar had grown into the cat and was embedded.  Off to Horseshoe Lake AH to have it surgically removed.  The collar had been put on when she was young and was almost pinching her in half.  She is doing great but she will have a terrible indentation where the collar was.  She is a very happy girl.
Cost of surgery: $200.00

Archie was a very cute puggle with a broken hip.  He also had heartworms!!  Arch had to have his hip repaired first and was done at HSLAH.  After he healed from that he got the heartworm treatment.  Poor boy.  He is doing well and should be ready for adoption soon.  Cost of surgery:  $450.00.

   Then there was Stevo.  MCAC picked him up and he had been hit by a car.  Off to HSLAH again and another fractured leg repair.  He had pins put in and is recovering at a foster home.  He is doing well. Beautiful dog and so sweet. Cost of surgery:  $1100.00

   Max ate some glasses and really hurt his intestines.  Luckily the glasses passed thru but almost killed him in the process. Max was surrendered to us and taken to HSLAH.  Exploratory surgery was needed to make sure there was nothing stuck.. He had a terrible infection, wouldn't eat and was in alot of pain.  It was touch and go but he is on the mend.  Cost of surgery: $450.00

   Nila, the dog, had a bladder full of stones.  The only option was surgery and she is now doing great.  She got adopted this weekend!  Cost of surgery: $550.00

    This year has been terrible for heartworms.  We have treated over 30 dogs for heartworms this year.  Just this month in June we have treated Quentin, Hoss, Orchid, Dreyfus, Roz, Fred, Archie, and Lilac.    Thank goodness we can get imiticide to treat them with no problems now. Cost of treatment:   Each dog costs from $60.00 to $250.00 to treat depending on the weight.

HSLAH called to say a pit pup was being surrendered by the family because it had parvo.  The pup was about 12 weeks old and had been sick for a week.  Not a good prognosis.  She spent a week at the vet and then came here.  She was so thin and still having diarrhea.  Her appetite was pretty good but everything she ate just came right back out.  We treated her for coccidia too. On Saturday she was back at HSLAH for diarrhea.  Dr. Randla prescribed a new med and food to try.  It worked!!   After three weeks she finally has turned the corner.  In just three days she has put on weight and is acting like a puppy.  That pup is one tough little girl.  I call her Pooh but no one seems to like that name.  Cost of treatment: $650.00.

Seeing a hurt, hopeless dog or cat at the pound turn into a happy, healthy pet:  Priceless!!

In Memory of Raymond

Dear partners 4 pets, It’s been many years but for those of you who remember Raymond adopted from Petsmart Florissant about 7/8 years ago I have to share some very sad news. My Raymond left me at age 12. His hips finally gave out on him but he was still full of life, he just couldn’t stand any more, not even with help. I will miss him so much. Thank you for bringing him into my life. Judy

April Events/March Update- 101 Adoptions!

   March was a great month.  Very busy.  Adoptions for the month were 101!!! We had the Dog Wash at Four Muddy Paws and washed 60 dogs.  Ravanellis hosted us on the 5th for charity night at the restaurant.  On the 17th the luck of the Irish made for a great roadblock in Troy.  The Troy Community Expo was nice.  Last night was the fund raiser at Schon on the Boulevard for P4P.  It was a fun night.  Several grants were written.  Several were received!!  All in all a good month.
   April will be busy too.  P4P will be at the Troy Park on the 8th for an Easter Egg Hunt from 10 AM til noon.  On the 13th the Paws and Clawz Marathon will be held with Stephy representing P4P.  April 14 and 15th will be the Low cost spay/neuter clinic in Granite City.  P4P, SNIP Alliance and OpSPOT teamed up to bring the mobil unit to the Granite City area to provide low cost spay/neuters.  The response was overwhelming and another two day event is scheduled for May.  Both events are reservation only and all have been filled.  We are planning more and will keep you updated.  On April 21 we will have a road block in Glen Carbon.  AS always the Adoption events will be held each Saturday at O'Fallon and each Sunday at Glen Carbon from 11-3:30 PM.  This Saturday we will be at the Glen Carbon and O'Fallon Petsmart both from 11-3:30 PM. 
   This has been heartworm month.  We currently have 8 dogs, I think, with heartworms.  A few doggie disasters.  Lloyd had his hip surgery and he is doing great.  A bit of a bad start when he opened his incision while I wasn't looking.  Bummer.  Elton the Yorkie had a bladder full of stones and had to have them removed.  Poor boy-I'm not sure how he was going to the bathroom. When they went in to remove the stones his bladder had ruptured and had to be repaired.   He had a bit of a rocky start after the surgery and couldn't pee due to swellling but he is making up for it now.  Mamma Mia is going back to her adoptor mom after her mom had back surgery and couldn't care for her.  Mia really perked up after hearing her Mom's voice on the phone so I'm sure she will be so excited to get back home.  We lost little Horatio who had been in hospice care with Bob and Cindy.  It is amazing how attached you can get in such a short time.  He was a great little guy and is greatly missed. 
   The dogs have been loving the warm weather.  Compared to last year the heating bills have been great so very thankful for that.  I think we will have a shelter day soon so I will keep you posted.  Take care and have a good month.
