Shelter Update-April 20, 2014

It has been a very busy two months at the shelter with sick and injured dogs and cats.  We got two litters of 10 pups from the pound and 16 out of 20 broke with parvo.  Ugh!!  Amazingly 14 out of the 16 pups pulled thru with a lot of care and prayers.  We also had two other pups and two adult dogs that came from the pound with parvo.  We lost one of those very fast.  Not a very good start to the spring with parvo.  Thank goodness for Cerenia-an anti nausea medication that we have been using for over a year to help the parvo dogs.  It has made all the difference in the world.

We also had 3 dogs with severely injured legs that required amputation.  Whisky and Scotty were hit by cars.  Ibby was the little dog with the rubber band around her back leg.  All are doing great and are getting around well.  This has also been a rough start to the year with many, many heartworm positive dogs-at least twenty treated so far this year. So far all are doing well.

The momma beagle, May, that had 7 babies and then became seriously ill was adopted!  Shortly after giving birth she began to vomit and had dark green diarrhea.  She couldn't feed the pups so bottle feeding started.  May even had surgery because of the possibility of a bowel obstruction but there was none.  Finally after two weeks she turned the corner and began to eat and drink on her own.  They aren't really sure what was going on with her.   Only 2 of the pups survived.  They were also sickly.  Feldman is one of the survivors and I really don't know how he made it.  He tried to die at least 5 times-had pneumonia, had to be tube fed and given fluids.  He also had a terrible eye infection before his little eyes even opened so he lost the sight in one eye.  The two brothers that survived should be ready for adoption soon.

In March we did 98 adoptions-70 dogs and 28 cats.  Total adoptions thru March are 345!!  So far in April we have done 53 adoptions!  Our little Sylvie finally was ready for adoption.  She is the cutest older French Bulldog.  Sylvie had a skin problem, bad teeth, heartworms and a cherry eye when we got her.  All that was taken care of and then she all of a sudden developed a large hernia.  Poor girl!  Luckily for her, we are persistent and didn't give up.  She got adopted to a great home.

Next Sunday-April 27 is our 5K Walk, Run or Wiggle at Troy Park to benefit heartworm awareness.  Stephanie Freeman is in charge of the event and doing a great job!!  Several months ago Stephanie helped to rescue Moe aka Chester who had heartworms.  She wanted to do something to help with his treatment and ended up helping many of our rescues with heartworms.  Even with a major scare Stephy has made this a great event for us.  Several months ago, Stephy was involved in a very bad car accident and is very lucky to be with us.  She has a broken knee, ribs and bad cuts on her face but she is one tough cookie.  Come join us for the event and say hi to our little miracle-Stephy.  Way to go girl!!

We have a lot of events coming up to help us pay for all the medical needs of the animals we rescue so check our Facebook page or the web site for details.  We rely on these fund raisers and donations to make sure we don't have to turn any away.
