Almost Frozen Puppies

Happy to report the pups are doing well.  Even the poor little runt.  The foster homes report they are eating like little piggies and have put on some weight already.  The little runt saved the day for her brothers and sisters.  She was left out in the open in the daycare parking lot because she couldn't walk anymore due to the cold.  She was the one spotted by Lisa C.  The other pups had gone under a bush and weren't visible from the road.  That would have been a sad site on Monday AM at the daycare.  Lucky pups!

Almost Frozen Puppies

Lisa C. was on her way to the shelter this afternoon and as she passed the daycare that is up the road from the shelter she saw something move in the parking lot.  There were 6-5 to 6 week old puppies dumped in the parking lot.  They were very cold and their little paws were beet red.  They were all thin and very hungry.  The little runt couldn't stand and was dehydrated.  She got them to the shelter and they got them warmed up and some food.  That was a lucky save.  It wouldn't have taken long for them to die in this weather.  A car had been spotted circling around there and they may  know who did it.

At the Shelter

Busy week as usual.  We did 43 spay and neuters in the clinic even with the big snowstorm.  There were 7 dog adoptions at the shelter during the week-Frampton, Abercrombie, Nancy the old maltese, Vixen, Bitsy and the two sharpei pups.  There were 3 kitty adoptions at the Florissant Petsmart. Very nice!!  People are really starting to come and visit at the shelter.  Amy is working on getting some volunteers to help at the shelter during the week.  Her email address is p4pvolunteers@gmail.com if you would be interested in helping.  Even an hour would work.  Trivia tables are starting to get booked.  The Collinsville PD will host one as well as Horseshoe Lake AH.  The competition begins!  We went to Belleville Petsmart today.  No adoptions yet but alot pf people in to look.  We are in great need of help there.  We will be there next Sat. too.

Mr. Pickles

Stats

Last week we did 39 spay and neuters.  Adoptions were 9 dogs and 3 cats.  Urbas got adopted!!  Way to go Urby.

SOS

OK.  We could certainly use some help getting a few dogs out of the pound.  We have max capacity at the new shelter and the old shelter too.  There are 6 at 7 Hills and we can only take 2.  I would rather not have to pick and choose which ones and leave the rest there so if anyone can take a pooch from Collinsville or my house (old shelter) that would help.  Call Nev at the shelter to make arrangements if you can at 540-PETS (7387).  Thanks, Lisa

Belleville Petsmart

We went to the Belleville, IL Petsmart located right off Rt. 15 today.  While we didn't do any adoptions we did have alot of people looking and stop by.  Everyone was very friendly and helpful.  We will be there next Sat. too from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM if you want to help or look for a friend.

Popsicle

A little scruffy yellow dog was found by a lady caught in a fence in this terrible cold.  They weren't sure how long he had been there.  He was brought into the county animal control and when Nev went to pick up another dog noticed him there shivering.  He had just come in within the hour.  She scooped him up and off to the vet. His feet were very red and swollen and he had some arthritis in his back but none the worse for wear.  He is an older little guy.  Poor thing was very hungry and exhausted.  He is hanging out here with us while we wait to see if anyone calls for him.  We named him Popsicle.

"Fewer Animals Put Down at Collinsville Shelter" in the STLToday

ARTICLE: The number of pets being euthanized at the Warren Billhartz Collinsville Animal Shelter dropped almost 90 percent during September and October compared to the same period last year. The decrease is being attributed to a new nonprofit running the shelter.

Mr. Pickles is doing well

Pickles the puggle got a good report from Dr. Ervin at Horseshoe Lake AH.  Pickles was hit by a car several months ago.  His right back leg was badly fractured and his left back hip was dislocated.  The fracture was so bad it would have normally been amputated but with that hip not a good idea.  So Dr. E pinned the hip and put pins in the leg fracture.  Pickles went to stay in a foster home with Bob and Cindy.  At first the leg wasn't healing well but the hip was holding.  Then the hip went out again and the leg seemed to be doing better.  Dr. E removed the hip joint so Pickles wouldn't have such pain.  The trick was to keep him off the leg and the hip so they could both heal.  That's where Bob and Cindy came in.  They kept him off his leg and hip for two weeks.  They sat with him and carried him around.  When he went out they used a towel to keep his back end immobile.  Then Sat. Dr. E said he could be weight bearing.  Yea!! So far so good.  He is a little wobbly walking but not bad.  Mr. Pickles is very lucky to have such a dedicated foster home to take care of him while he recovers.  Thanks Bob and Cindy!  Dr. E too.

Busy week at the shelter.  The clinic did 40 spay and neuters.  We did 11 adoptions too.  Coco, Barkley, Jasper the kitty, Sally, Lyla, Bombay, Duke, Boogy, Nutmeg, Anise, and Anya all found new homes!  Today at Petsmart 6 found new homes-Ross, Natalia, Diamond, Gilligan, Danny and Stormie.  This is good news since we took in about the same number.

Adoptions For 2010

Happy New Year to All.  2010 was a very  busy year.  Total adoptions for the year was 1102!!  This was up from last year with 1017 adoptions.  Good work everyone!  That is 1102 actual living dogs and cats that would not be alive today.  We have received alot of really nice notes from adopters and I will try to post some of those as we get them. The spay/neuter clinic at the shelter did 215 spay and neuters for the month even with the busy holidays.  Continue to get the word out that we have this great clinic at our shelter.
