Weekend Update-Sept. 24 & 25

Adoptions were a little down this weekend with 10 adoptions but you can't have weekends like the last two every week.  All in all it was a nice weekend.  Dog adoptions were the two girl pups-Mercedes and Lexus, Bruiser, and McKenna.  Kitties were Destin, Tide, Tayla, Marbles, Twist and Shout, and Princess.  Thunder and Lightning were to foster/trial homes as did Bruiser the Pug and Kinston the cocker.  We did get Gizmo returned this weekend.  Bummer. We were able to pull several new dogs from the pound and they are getting ready for their new homes.
We have two dogs awaiting heartworm treatment at the shelter-Winslow the Yorkie and Iris the Rat terrier.  Due to the shortage of heartworm treatment medication they are just in limbo til we can get the meds.  It would be really nice for them to go to a foster while we are waiting and during treatment.  If you are interested please let us know.  We also have two pooches here that have been here a while.  Sleepy and Bashful are both a little timid and would benefit from some one on one.

Bruiser and his new Family

Sunday was the big 5K race for P4P at the Tri-township park.  Lots of runners and walkers showed up to help our shelter.  Many dogs came to participate too.  Roger Smith Photography Studio was there and took many picts that we will post on Facebook.  A fun time was had by all.  Big thanks to Lindsay, Laura, Dave and Sarah for putting on the 5K for us.  Amazing!
Next Sat., Oct. 1 is the Purina Pet Project at Purina Farm.  We will be attending with our dogs.  Should be fun so come out and help the local shelters.  There will be 30 shelters there with adoptable pets.  Everyone is asked to bring two items to donate.  All donations will be divided among the groups.

Meet Major

Major, as in major pain, arrived at the shelter with his brother, Maloney, from the St. Louis Co. AC.  They were red min pin mixes.  Neither were very happy.  As in trying to bite anything that moved.  They were scared and traumatized to the point of being inconsolable.  I put them in the front room since it was quieter and also because if they got loose it the main shelter it wouldn't be pretty.
This is my favorite kind of dog to get out of the pound.  I'm not kidding. They are usually just really scared and it doesn't take long for them to come around.  At the pound you usually have to noose them out of the cage with a lead.  They fight, bite, scream and do the alligator spiral.  A few times I haven't been able to get the noose on them and it is either have the AC guys get them with the catch pole or leave them.  I leave when they have to do that.  Dogs hate catch poles.  Sometimes when they get outside with you and realize they aren't going for "that walk" they look around and you can see them realize they are OK. Some even get very happy and ride in your lap home.   Not Major.
It was really a trick to get their crate cleaned.  Major would charge you as you tried to clean.  Mahoney was a little better and was calming down. Before long I could pick him up.  Not Major.  It took 3 weeks for him to let me touch him.  That was a new record. First it was a little scratch on the head.  At least he wasn't trying to go for my throat when I cleaned his cage.  I was beginning to wonder if he would come around.  Slowly but surely he did.  Then I was his new best friend.  He graduated into the main shelter.
Major didn't like many people.  He liked Leah, me and Barb.  That was about it.  He would try to bite others that came into the shelter.  Especially guys.  And he was fierce about it. When he was alone in the shelter while I cleaned he was very happy.  He loved to be held and became very possessive.
What were we going to do with him.  He was at the shelter for at least 5 months.  He failed Petsmart miserably.  I took him up with me one day to adoptions.  That was a mistake.  His brother got adopted-which is another whole story.  When I was going on vacation I asked Barb to take him home so he wouldn't be so awful at the shelter while I was gone.  He loved Barb and she had been thinking about fostering him.  OK, you know I had ulterior motives.
It was a little iffy at first.  Slowly but surely he got comfortable.  He loved to sleep in the bed under the covers-on his back. What a goof ball.  Then Barb asked if she could keep him.  Hmmm, let me think about this-OK.  Major got his life back.  It's lucky we are patient around here but just goes to show you what a little TLC will do.  Check out the picts.

Probably smiling? Doubt it.

Super Major

Is this a dog? Well, yes it is!

This is Harvey before and after.  Shocking that he was turned into the pound in this shape.  He could hardly see and was matted to the skin.  He stunk to high heaven.  Lucky for him Barb, who works at the shelter, took him home and gave him a grooming.  Barb said he stood so still and held his little face up for her to trim the matts and gunk away.  How much better he had to feel.  After he was all clean he ran around the house all happy and excited.  Woo-hoo Harvey!!

Mandy is Smiling :)

This is Mandy who was shot in the leg and left in the woods to die.  Lucky for her a very nice person found her and called Angie.  Mandy had a huge gaping hole on her leg right at the joint and she was in shock.  You could see the bone.  She was stabilized at the emergency clinic and then went to Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital in the AM.  Dr. Ervin wasn't sure the leg could be saved.  There were broken chips in the leg.  It was so painful and infected.  The leg was cleaned and bandaged.  Off she went to a foster home who hadn't had to change such a bad wound.  I was on vacation.  Between Horseshoe, Angie and Lisa K the bandage was changed every day. Wet to dry dressings removed the infected, dead tissue.  Antibiotics helped to get rid of the infection.  Pain meds to help especially at dressing change time.  Slowly but surely the big hole filled in.  When I saw the wound it looked very good.  Clean, pink, healing.  Good job Angie and Lisa K! Next she went to Leighs' house and got some physicial therapy.  The joint was very stiff but she started putting weight on it.  Before you knew it she was in a trial for adoption.  This is her in her trial home.  Keep your fingers crossed.  Thanks to all who helped Mandy.
