Huck Rescued! Twice!

Partners For Pets in Troy, IL has worked with Clinton County Animal Control for many years.  Partners takes dogs and cats from CCAC and finds them new homes.  This is one of the more unusual rescues.  Huck was spotted, stranded by a rain swollen creek.  Clinton County Animal Control sprung into action.  Don Deiters is the Animal Control Officer there and he goes above and beyond to help the animals at the Clinton County Pound.  Partners For Pets took the stray dog, who was named Huck, from the pound.  Last Sunday, Huck was adopted!!!  Way to go Don and  Huck!   Here is the story:

A BLACK AND TAN SHEPARD WAS STRANDED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF CROOKED CREEK OFF 10TH ST IN THE FLOODED  BOTTOMS BY CENTRALIA FOR AT LEAST 3 DAYS... BEFORE THE CLINTON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL WAS NOTIFIED.  TAMMY TRAVIS FROM THE CENTRALIA HUMANE SOCIETY CALLED ANIMAL CONTROL AND GAVE THE LOCATION OF THE STRANDED DOG.

CLINTON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL ASKED THE SHERIFF'S DEPT. IF THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY WOULD HELP WITH THIS TYPE OF RESCUE. THEY RESPONDED  WITH AN 18 FT BOAT TO HELP IN THE RESCUE. TONY FROM THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY AND DON FROM ANIMAL CONTROL TRIED TO COAX THE DOG AND CATCH HIM. AFTER A LITTLE WHILE THE SHEPARD HAD ENOUGH AND TOOK OFF AWAY FROM US, SO WE DECIDED TO SET A  LIVE TRAP WITH SOME CANNED DOG FOOD ON THE HIGHEST LEVEL SPOT OF GROUND, SO IF THE CREEK WOULD COME UP ANY HIGHER, THE DOG IF TRAPPED  WOULD BE OKAY.
AFTER SETTING THE TRAP WE DECIDED TO QUIT FOR THE DAY AND CHECK FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, WE  GOT IN THE BOAT AND WENT ACROSS THE CREEK TO LOAD THE BOAT ON THE  CARRIER.
WE JUST HAD THE BOAT SECURED WHEN THE DOG REAPPEARED FROM THE TIMBER AND WATER. WE WAITED JUST A SHORT WHILE AND THE DOG WENT STRAIGHT FOR THE TRAP AND SMELT THE FOOD AND WITHIN A FEW MINUTES THE TRAPPED TRIPPED AND WE HAD OUR DOG..
WE THEN RELAUNCHED THE 18 FT BOAT AND GOT THE TRAP WITH THE SHEPARD AND BROUGHT BACK TO HIGH GROUND.
AFTER SOME CONGRATS AND  WARM GREETINGS FROM THE PEOPLE GATHERED AND A FEW PICTURES WERE TAKEN, THE DOG WAS LOADED ONTO THE CLINTON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL TRUCK AND BROUGHT  TO THE ANIMAL  SHELTER WHERE IT WOULD  BE CHECKED  BY 2 SCANNERS FOR ANY TYPE OF IDENTIFICATION.  -NO MICRO CHIP FOUND
NOW WE WAIT FOR THE OWNER TO CALL --WE WILL ALSO PUT A PICTURE OF THE DOG IN SEVERAL NEWSPAPERS AND LIST HIM ON 2 RADIO STATIONS... AND IF THE SHEPARD IS NOT CLAIMED THEN, IT WILL BE UP FOR ADOPTION.

Huck was not claimed so Partners For Pets agreed to take the dog and find him a new home.  Huck received all medical care and was neutered.  Luckily, he was negative for heartworms.  Adopted!!
THE CENTRALIA HUMANE SOCIETY HONORED THREE MEN FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN HELPING A STRANDED DOG OFF AN ISLAND IN CROOKED CREEK IN FEBRUARY.

In Memory of Grumpy

Grumpy aka Lincoln

Grumpy came to us from the pound and he was a little grumpy to say the least.  He seemed pretty sad and was not very trusting of anyone at first.  He was the perfect example of a really great dog at the pound that was not acting very nice with little chance of getting out of the pound.  Luckily we like crabby dogs-they are usually just scared.  So Grumps came to the shelter.  He was very cute so people wanted him.  He, however, did not want them.  He was adopted a few times and brought back because he was, well, Grumpy.  Then at the Dog Wash last year the perfect people came along.  We held our breath.  He didn't come back!  We just got word that Grumpy just passed away from cancer.  His family loved him and he was happy there.  After a life of feeling grumpy he got to spend his last year with people that adored him.  He finally got to know what a nice life was.  Thank you to the people that can look past a grumpy, matted, scared, sick little dog and see a wonderful potential.

This is what his family had to say.

About a year ago my wife & I adopted a little dog from you called Grumpy. He had been returned to your shelter a couple of times because of his attitude, apparently thus the name Grumpy. When we saw the posting we said he needed a home no matter what his attitude was! We immediately changed his name to Lincoln and he has been nothing but a blessing in our home. With a lot of patience and love he had become a great little dog. He passed away two days ago from cancer and we miss him terribly. I thought Partners for Pets would like to know. We will never regret adopting Lincoln.

Give Us a Hand!

The Cost of Success!

Partners For Pets has always taken sick and injured dogs and cats from the pounds.  We spend countless hours making them well so they can have a new life and home.  We are very lucky to have Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital that believes in what we do and gives great vet care to our rescues.  While they do give us a big discount to help them, it is still expensive.  Here are a few of our success stories and what it costs to make them well!

IMP
Imp came to us from the pound.  He had been hit by a car and had a leg injury.  He had been at a vet in the town he came from for a week and had not gone to the bathroom.  When we got him his belly was very distended.  At HSLAH they found he had a stricture on his colon and had developed megacolon from not going to the bathroom.  Imp had to be sedated and all the stool in his colon and intestines removed because he could not go to the bathroom on his own.  The xrays showed he was just full of stool and his colon stretched.  At first they thought he would have to have surgery to repair the stricture.  But would the mega colon ever let him be normal.  What to do?  Dr. Mollet was on the case.  She called around to some specialists.  They didn't advise doing surgery on a pup, so this is what we did for about 5 weeks.

Every week, and sometimes twice a week,  Imp had to go to HSLAH to have his bowels evacuated.  They would knock him out and just clean him out.  He was put on lactulose and soft food to keep the stool soft. Each time he went they stretched the stricture to try to allow the stool to pass normally.  It didn't seem to be working well but he could on occasion go potty on his own.  Then Dr. Mollet found some information about using Zantac and that really seemed to help.  The stricture stretching continued and then the next xrays were done.  The megacolon was almost back to normal.  The stricture was stretched and he seemed to be going well on his own.  Imp get neutered this week and has his last check up before adoption.  Cost of Care:  $679.49.

MOMMA
Momma came to us with heartworms and was given treatment.  We have treated probably 60 dogs for heartworms in the last year.  Most do really well with the treatment, Momma did not.  She started coughing up blood and was very sick.  It was really touch and go for several weeks.  The xrays showed  a lot of fluid in her lungs and it didn't look good.  She wouldn't eat and was very lethargic.  She had to be hospitalized several days for intense care. Slowly but surely with good care from HSLAH and  her foster mom she got better.  Cost of Care:  $718.51.

TOBY
Toby is an older guy and was on a trial to adopt.  He got away from the family and got hit not once but twice by a car.  A very nice person took him to Four Paws vet in O'Fallon where they stabilized him and found he had a broken leg.  We transferred him to HSLAH and Dr. Ervin put 8 pins in his leg to fix the break.  Toby was pretty banged up but no internal injuries!  After weeks of waiting his pins should all come out next week.
Cost of Care:  $1214.68

LUCKY LETA
Leta came to us with a severely damaged eye.  The eye was very painful and swollen.  It could not be repaired and had to be removed.  After several weeks the surgery was healed and Leta was ready for a new home.  Cost of Care:  $285.00

Other rescues such as Marley, Daffodil, and Curt all required care above and beyond.  They were in terrible shape and thanks to HSLAH and a lot of hard work they all made it and are doing great.
