November Recap/December 2012 Calendar

November was a very busy month with December promising to be busy also.  Trivia, on Nov. 10th, was a fun evening with much needed funds raised for the shelter.  On Nov. 17th, Partners For Pets walked in the Granite City Christmas Parade and handed out over 1000 fliers about the low cost spay/neuter clinic offered in Granite.  The clinic has ended for the fall but will start again in March. Nearly 350 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered since August with the mobile unit at the Americas' Port!  Big thanks to OpSPOT and SNIP Alliance for their hard work and collaboration with Partners For Pets to make this happen.  On Nov. 23, Partners For Pets was at the Holiday Magic event in St. Louis.  The best news-we did 71 adoptions for the month!! Woo Hoo!!

Lost Dog

LOST YOUR PET?  WHAT TO DO?

A beautiful pit pup was at the pound.  Today was his last day.  Luckily, he was rescued by Partners For Pets Animal Shelter. P4P staff goes to Madison County Animal Control several times a week to check for dogs and cats that have run out of time and are about to be euthanized.  There are beautiful, healthy dogs and cats that have come in as strays and surely belong to someone.  So why hasn’t someone been looking for their pet?

Many times people don’t know where to look and don’t act quick enough to find their pet.  They don’t realize that their pet can end up at Madison County Animal Control all the way from Godfrey. Tragically, if the animal is not claimed or a rescue group doesn’t pull the animal it will be euthanized.  There are just too many animals to be rescued.

On Tuesday, one day after the pit pup would have been euthanized, the pup’s owner posted a picture on Lost Dogs of Illinois and a P4P volunteer spotted him.  The family was in Wood River and had checked all the local places but not Madison County AC as it is in Edwardsville.

The same week a disabled woman called P4P and had been told by animal control P4P may have pulled her dog from the pound.  P4P had pulled the dog the day the dog would have been euthanized. The woman called animal control a day too late.  She also lived in Wood River.  P4P had pulled her little pet.  Luckily both dogs were reunited with their owners.  Both dogs and families were very happy.

It could have been a very different story.  Partners For Pets and Metro East Humane Society are the only two shelters that take animals from Madison County Animal Control.  Last year 3689 dogs and cats were taken in at animal control.  Only 335 were reunited with their owners.  Local animal controls took 1348 animals they picked up to Madison County AC.  The animals come from all over Madison County which stretches from Highland to Granite City and Godfrey to Collinsville.

People need to realize when their pet is missing to call Madison County Animal Control right away at (618) 692-1700 and let them know.  Dogs only have 5 business days and cats 3 days to stay.  Provide a detailed description to the officers and better yet, go by there to look.  Animal Control does their best to reunite the pets but there are so many there.

Other ideas to find a lost pet:

Call your local police department and animal control.
Call local Veterinary offices.
Post fliers in the area the pet was lost and at local businesses.
Put a name tag on your pet with your phone number.
Microchip your pet.
Post your lost pet on FaceBook on lostmydoggie.com, helpmefindmypet.com, petamberalert.com, fidofinder.com, and lostdogsofillinois.com .  Rescues forward them.
Call local animal shelters and rescues.
Post on Craig’s List.
Put an ad in the newspaper.
Don’t give up!  Pets have been returned after many months!

Partners For Pets (P4P) is a not for profit animal rescue shelter in Troy, IL.  They only pull dogs and cats from animal control facilities that are about to be euthanized.  Sick and injured animals are rescued and given medical care.  Last year P4P rescued and rehabbed 939 animals. Adoptions are held every Sunday from 11:00 to 3:30 PM at the Glen Carbon PetSmart.  Check our website at www.partners4pets.petfinder.com to see our adoptable pets and for information about P4P.
