Weekly Update Oct. 24-30, 2011-11 Adoptions!

We had all dog adoptions this week.  Not a single kitty.  The dogs that got a new home were Eddie, Hooch, Duchess, Bella, Riley, Harry, Arvid, Booker, Britta, Lilo and Bianca.  We were able to pull 5 from the pound.  One return was Kyle the beagle.  Not sure why.  We also had 4 cats returned to us.  Each adoptor must sign a contract that says if they cannot keep the pet they have to return it to us.  This helps us to make sure they end up in a safe place and we can find a new home for them.  On occaision people will turn them into the pound but due to the microchip the pounds usually call us and we go and get them.
Hooch and his new Family

Riley and new Family

Bella and Family.  Yea I got a brother!

Eddie and Family

We also got a new little dog that was very pregnant and had her babies the very next day.  It was a little rough.  Karen D is fostering her and this was her first time to have babies.  Due to the stress and pain she was trying to hurt the babies.  Karen got her to Horseshoe and after the delivery she settled down.  She is still having problems keeping up with feeding them and they may need to be bottle fed.  Luckily we have a few very skilled people for that.
Kelsey Mae got to go a foster home and she is really enjoying herself with Rebecca and her family.  Anyone wanting to foster please let us know.  The dogs and cats really benefit from the home time. We have some really great foster homes and it makes all the difference.  We are able to see how the rescue will be in a home and give more info. to adoptors.  Plus the rescues love it.  Kelsey will get better faster and is finally relaxing and sleeping after months of just trying to survive.  Take a look at her picts on the previous story.

Who Loves Ya Baby!

This is Duchess.  She was returned to us last weekend.
How could you give up that face?  She is a really great dog.

Kelsey Mae

This poor girl came in last Tues. night with 12 other dogs from a pound in Mo. rescued by Lisa K.   In her picture she looked so sweet and hairy.  She was an older girl and they don't make it out of the pound easily.  This dog was absolutely covered in matts. Not just little matts I mean whole body matts that were thick and stinky.  The next day Barb took the clippers to her and what was under the matts was scarey.  Yikes!  The bag in the picture was her very stinky hair.  Kelsey was so bone thin and covered in crud.  She was so matted it was hard for her to go to the bathroom.  It was just caked on.  There were sores all over her bottom where the BM had been on her skin for too long.  Pretty sad.  On Friday Joan and Bing finished grooming her.  She looked so cute in her little sweater.  Fortunately she had a good appetite and ate.  She had terrible diarrhea for a few days but we are starting to get that under control too.  Now that should have been a neglect case as she was an owner turn in. But it wasn't.  I really hope she isn't heartworm positive but we will tackle that hurdle if she is.

Weekly Update Oct. 15-23, 2011

Lots of activity this week.  Thirteen adoptions.  Must be our lucky number this week.  The dogs that were adopted were:  Annie the Puggle, Ellie, Carrie Ann, Ranger (the puppy that had Parvo and made it), and Velvet.  Arvid was adopted but came back when the family kitty tried to eat him.  Cats that were adopted were:  Darling, Willie, Beth, Hector, Rowena, Gulliver, Victor and Daisy.
Duchess went to a foster home as did Cuddles.  Axel, Britta and Camilla also went to a foster home.  Foster homes are so important.  Only fostering one would make a huge difference for that one.

Busy week with rescues coming in. Wonder woman, Lisa K, rescued 13 dogs and pups out of the Springfield AC. We took a few here and the rest went to foster homes.  One poor pooch, Kelsey Mae, was in terrible shape under tons of matts, sores and crud. Good job girl! That's 13 pooches that would not be with us now if not for 1 persons shear determination.  That is what rescue is all about.  Going above and beyond the call of duty to help an animal in need.  I am happy to say we have alot of people in our group willing to go the extra to help.  When everyone works together and the focus is clear, so much can be accomplished.  Everyone does their part and the total is awesome!! So many more animals saved.  Check out FaceBook to see the Springfield 13 pictures.

Met a lot of very nice people at the Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob Chamber of Commerce Business Expo at the Triad HS on Thurs. PM.  Got the word out about the Howl-o-Ween Party and Rabies Clinic.  Nev and I manned the booth and talked to a few potential fosters and volunteers.  Dawn and her crew with the Chamber did a great job as usual.

The Howl-o-Ween Pet Party at the Troy FCB Bank was awesome!!  We had a great time and really appreciate Diana and her crew at the bank for hosting it.  Free food, fun and really great weather.  Lots of very nice merch with the vendors.  Izzy from the Grizzlies came for a visit.  Hawthorne Vet Clinic did a low cost Rabies Clinic for the public.  Great turn out for that.  Big thanks to Dr. McKinney and his crew.  Our tent was right behind the Kettle Corn booth.  Lovely smells of kettle corn.  We did an adoption with another pending.  Possible foster home for Ranger-keep your fingers crossed.  Lots of people stopping by to say hello and visit with their adopted dog.  The costume contest was a riot.  Dylan the spaghetti chef was so funny.  See her picture on the FaceBook page.  All in all a great time.  And we riased over $1300.00 for the rescues.  Again our lucky number.  Thanks to all the volunteers who came to help.  BIG THANK YOU!!! to Jennifer and Meghan for all their hard work putting this event together to help the shelter dogs and cats. Great job!!

Weekend Update Oct. 15 and 16, 2011

Owen and his new family

Sadie and her new family

Kingston and his new family

Vivian and her new family.  She is smiling!

This week was a little crazy.  Full moon I guess.  The dogs were really acting up at the shelter.  We had two dogs with parvo that came in with it.  One was a little chi from the vet.  She was pretty sick and had been sick for several days.  The family gave her up so we took her.  Tonight she was starving and ate some chicken.  The other was a pup and he is doing great.  Back to normal.  Whew!!  We are able to use a new drug called Cerenia to treat the dogs with parvo and it has made a huge difference in the recovery.
Adoptions were pretty good this week.  The dogs that went to a new home were:  Biddly, Crumpet, Rochelle!!, Penelope was returned and readopted, Vivian, Elsa, Sadie, Owen, and Kingston.  Kitties going home were: Princess, Keesha, Mia, Cindy, and Sheena.  Fourteen adoptions in all!!  Also, Camilla went to a foster home.  Carrie Ann went on a trial.
Our new pull from the Clinton Co. Pound gave us a big surprise with 5 new babies.  Cadence, a beautiful gray Great Dane, was a very thin stray.  We got her on Thursday and on Tues. she had her babies.  All girls!
The Troy road block was great!!  It was a beautiful day and people were in a good mood.  We raised between $1400.00 -1500.00 (depending on changeamount) for the animals at the shelter. Big thanks to all who helped at the roadblock-Kate, Cindy, Bob, Dominic, Lucy, Jason, Shannon, Paula and Shannon.  Also to Camilla and Vivian who came and showed people why we are doing this.  Viv got adopted today!!
Next Saturday is the P4P Howl-o-Ween Pet Party at the Troy FCB Bank.  It is from 9 AM til 2 PM.  There will be food, about 25-30 vendors, adoptions, and costume contests.  Please come by!

Puppies!!

Last Thursday Nev went to the Clinton Co. Animal Control.  There was a beautiful gray Great Dane there.  The Dane had been a stray and on the loose for 4 weeks before she was finally caught.  They had to tranquilize her to catch her.  She was pretty thin but in good shape.  Later that evening when she came out to the shelter it looked like she had either just had babies or was pregnant.  After feeling the kicks and movement-guess what-she was pregnant!  It was just hard to tell with her being so thin and big.
On Tuesday, the Mama, Cadence, started looking a little uncomfortable and before long here came the first baby.  She had 5 in all-three gray and 2 black.  All girls.  They looked great for her being so thin and having only 5 probably helped.  She is a really good Mama and very protective of her babies.  Cadence and the pups are in a foster home.  Will keep you updated.

Weekend Update Oct. 8 & 9, 2011

Harvey before and after.  His little handsome self was adopted this weekend.

Not bad!!  We had some luck with a few bigger dogs.  Kaiser, the beautiful German Shepard, was adopted today.  Milly, a very scared Pit, was taken to a foster home.  Dog adoptions were:  Harvey!, Jack, Emmet, Lightning, Nina, Stubby, and Carlie. Kitties were Kramer, Duke, Oreo, Bella, Margo, and Franny.  Krumpet, Velvet, Clint, and Axel went to foster homes or trials.  We were able to pull 9 dogs and 2 litters of kittens and the mama's plus 2 adult kitties. A great dane was pulled and is very pregnant.  Will keep you posted.
We have some dogs at the shelter that have been here a while.  It would be nice if they could get into a foster home to give them a break.  All are doing OK here, except Davey, but all would benefit from a foster home.  Davey is a young dog that is in need of some obedience training.  There is too much stimulation here for him.  Wieter, Sleepy, Bashful, Wheezy (no cats), Lucien, Wishbone, Tonto and Ranger have been here the longest.  If you would be interested in fostering one of them call Nev at 618-540-7387.
Next weekend is the roadblock on Sat. from 8 AM til 2 PM in Troy.  We need a few more people to fill in for the 11 AM to 2 PM shift.  Email me at lisawp4p@aol.com if you can help.  We will be at the Glen Carbon Petsmart Sat. and Sunday.  Oct. 22 will be our Howl-O-Ween party at the FCB bank in Troy.
Leah is retiring from working at the shelter and this is her last week.  She has come to clean every Mon. thru Thursday for the last 8 years.  I will miss her watchful eye over the kitties and her help when one was sick.  She has taken quite a few home that were very sick and somehow pulled them through. Leah made it possible to have the shelter here by coming to help clean. Somehow she found her way up to the shelter one day and stuck around.  I will really miss seeing her in the morning but wish her the best.  Thanks Leah!

Weekend Update-Oct. 1 and 2, 2011

Adoptions were really good this weekend.  There were 12 dogs and 4 cats that went to new homes.  THe dogs were Daffney, Missy, Lawrence, Lavinia, Willow, Pippa, Nicolet, Cutie, Herbert, Lady, Gordon, amd Lambeau.  The kitties were Scraggle, Ringo, Emmy, and Pippet.  Emmet went on a trial and is doing well I hear.  We were able to take in 5 dogs and a litter of kittens, one kitten, and a big orange boy with really bad ears.  He has scratched them so much he has really injured himself.
The Purina Pet Project at Purina Farm was so nice.  I hadn't been there for a while and they have a really beautiful building just perfect for an adoption event.  There was a nice turnout and about 30 rescue/ animal controls, shelters there.  We didn't have any adoptions but met alot of very nice people.  There were herding demo's, vendors and lots of dogs and cats.  Hope they have another one there.  Thanks to Katie, Adrienne, Kate and Rebecca for helping with the booth and the dogs.
The Monsanto contest is on and we need people to vote.  Stray Rescue is ahead with over 33K votes but the second and third place of 10 K and 5K are still in reach.  If we could get 200 people to vote every day we would have a very good chance.  Please tell your friends and don't forget to vote.  Every day til the 16th.
Next weekend we will be at the O'Fallon Petsmart on Sat. for the first time.  Sunday at Glen.  The roadblock for Glen Carbon on the 8th was not approved  because we had already done one for the year. The roadblock for Troy on the 15th is still on.  The Howloween party at FCB bank in Troy is Oct. 22 and will be lots of fun.  There are 25 vendors so far, food, costume contest, and adoptions.  Dress your doggie or kitty for the contest.

Nicolette and her new family.  Happy Birthday to her new mom.

Cutie with her new family.
