We Have Moved!

As of July 31 we are no longer at the Collinsville shelter.  Thanks to all who helped with the move back to Troy.  All went smoothly and no one was left behind.  All the animals are in foster or back here at our shelter safe and sound.  We even took one final owner surrender that was bringing her in as we were leaving Sunday afternoon.  Now we can focus on what is really important-helping the animals.

Happy Adoptions!!

Moving Progress

On Friday ADR Towing moved our shed from Collinsville to the old shelter.  Big thanks to ADR for helping us out.  The shed is already repacked with all our stuff and the food.  On Saturday we moved alot of the cat cages back to the old shelter so we can begin moving the kitties.  Everyone braved the heat and let me tell you it was hot!!  Thanks to all who helped Saturday.  We will continue moving this week also.  This Saturday we will get everything else out so please come if you can to help with the last of the move and cleaning.  There are about 11 dogs and 15 kitties left to move.  If anyone can foster a dog or cat temporarily it would be greatly appreciated.  Derby, Reeny, Emily and Rose were adopted this weekend so that was a big help.

Dessie

When Dessie came to us she was so scared.  Such a beautiful girl.  This is Dessie in her new home with Diana.  She is doing great and now has the best home.  They are traveling together and Dessie is learning to trust people again.  Thanks for giving her a new life.

Sad News

Our little buddy Tilt didn't make it.  He had one surgery to remove a salivary gland that was causing his neck to swell.  This really didn't help and the other one was removed.  Two days after the surgery he began to have severe seizures and the decision was made to put him down.  I will miss that cute little perky face.  He was really a trooper and I only wish we could have fixed him.

We Are Moving!! Back

P4P will not renew the contract with the City of Collinsville to run the Warren Billhartz Animal Shelter.  The building was shared with the Citys' 2 full time animal control officers. The contract is up July 31. It will go back to being an animal control facility.  Hopefully, the City will allow us to continue to pull animals from there to help keep their euthanasia rate down.  We will be moving all the animals currently under the care of P4P to the old shelter.  Fortunately, we had never stopped using the original shelter and the transition should be pretty smooth.  We will continue to do adoptions at Petsmart on the weekends.  The spay/neuter clinic will need to find a new home. There are several options.
This move is NOT due to financial reasons. While we were at WBAS the euthanasia rate went from 67% to less than 4%. P4P opened a low cost spay/neuter clinic which was performing 50-70 surgeries per week.  All the animals, including animal control, were cared for by P4P.  All of this was done at no cost to the City. It is really a shame the building built by Mr. Billhartz to help the animals find new homes will not be used for that purpose.
So then, why the move?  The arranged marriage between the police department, animal control and P4P did not work.  We were never welcome in the building by the City staff and it was taking a toll on the staff, volunteers, animals and adopters.  So the decision was made to leave to concentrate on what we do best.  Help the animals.
The letter to terminate the contract was sent to City officials almost three weeks ago. We were not contacted by the City until today.  Even then, no one from the City asked why we were leaving. Only if we could leave before the 31st.  No doubt, we made the right decision.

Nathanial aka Snuffles Update

A few months ago Nathanial the Cocker went to Wisconsin Cocker Rescue, Inc. to get some cocker TLC. He got to fly up in his own transport plane.   Nathanial came to us with a terrible cleft palate and a cherry eye.  When I brought him into my house my dogs were so rude and shunned him.  They acted like they were scared of him.  Dr. E did some surgery on it but it was still pretty bad.  He had the most wonderful nasaly howl you've ever heard.  I really don't know how he survived as a puppy as he would not have been able to nurse very well.  He was always such a happy guy and he is really an inspiration.  If you go to the cocker rescue website you  can see a video of him.  He looks great!
