Cadbury Needs Your Help!!

Yesterday Nev went to the county animal control and was told a dog had come in that had been hit by a car.  They were giving it pain meds but it had been there 2 days and was in alot of pain.  They said they were going to put her down.  When Nev went into the kennel she was laying down and couln't get up.  Even though she was in alot of pain her tail was just thumping away.  So Nev scooped her up and off to Horseshoe she went.  Dr. Ervin didn't have very good news.  Her front left leg was not broken but severely nerve damaged.  The back left leg had a bad femur fracture.  The leg would need surgical repair and the front one may need to be amputated.  Dr. E was not very encouraging but we reminded him of Max and Mr. Pickles and he relented.  They named her Cadbury and gave her alot of pain meds.  On Friday bad news.  The surgery for the leg was $850.00 alone.  The front amputation, if needed, would be another $4-500.00.  further xrays, pin removal, medication and barring no complications we were looking at $1500.00 to 2000.00.  And that darn dog just kept wagging her tail at everyone.  Mary, who took care of Max when he was so injured, jumped into action.  She called the news.  Someone wrote to an emergency financial aid group.  So we are hoping to raise the funds by Tuesday when Dr. E can do the surgery for the back leg. SHe is a very sweet dog and not once has she tried to bite anyone when she probably should due to the pain.  She is on alot of pain meds now and comfortable. If everyone would give up one meal out we could get this girl fixed right up.  See the news cast on the Fox 2 web site.

In Memory of Joshie

i adopted a dog from partners 4 pets. his name was josh (beagle spaniel mix) and i wanted to let them know that he passed away not too long ago :( i wanted to thank you all for saving him from a shelter in nashville illinois (i believe!) every saturday when you guys were there i would walk by his cage and he was the only one that didnt bark. lol! he would sit on my lap on breaks and finally i convinced my mom and dad we needed him. he was a perfect fit into our household. we had 2 dachschunds that he instantly bonded with. he actually kinda just sat there and stared at them! haha. but they all slept together and went on their walks together. its what he needed. he came to me so scared and took a while to warm up to men but he was such a great dog. he had a special place in my heart! he was so down to earth...he would sit out in the rain LOL he loved the outdoors. when he couldnt go any longer i got him a trailer to my bike and we would go on the katy trail and ride to augusta.  thanks again for all the great memories you gave me and joshie!

New Adoption Schedule at Petsmart

We will be going to the Belleville, IL Petsmart now instead of the Florissant store.  Our schedule at Glen Carbon will stay the same.  The Belleville Petsmart is great and we are very happy to be there.  Please come by on Saturdays from 11-4 PM.

Eustis

This is Eustis.  He was found wandering the streets with a severely damaged eye.  A nice person took him to the emergency clinic where he was treated.  His eye had to be removed.  No one called to claim him.  He was terribly matted and also has heartworms.  Still a very chipper and happy boy. Sorry for the yuky picture.

Fun at Trivia Night

A fun night was had by all at the Trivia Night Saturday evening.  Lots of people turned out to help the animals at our shelter.  Big Thanks to Annette and her crew for putting on a great show.  They raised some much needed funds for the animals.

Great Adoptathon Weekend

Our total adoptions for the week were 37!!  There were 22 dogs and 15 cats found new homes.  Thanks to all who helped with adoptions this weekend.  We got a little ambitious and did Florissant, Belleville and Glen all on Sat.  Little Bert and Ernie got a home together.  Four of the pups found almost frozen in the parking lot got adopted.  One of our older cats from the shelter was adopted.  Several dogs from the shelter got into foster homes as the foster dogs were adopted.  Very good weekend!

Sad Little Puppies

This is Honey and Lucky.  One of the pups was left outside and found by a nice person.  Theother was brought into AC.  Jennifer D and Megan drove to Mt. Vernon to pick the pups up from the AC in Marion, IL.  Both have severe demodex mange.  They both are on meds and got a good bath this AM.  Will keep you posted on how they do.

Bently is feeling better

Last week we got a very cute yellow lab mix pup from an animal control.  In two days he came down with parvo and was very sick.  Last night he ate and drank and all is well.  Still looks a bit thin but he went several days without eating.  Whew!!

Two Rottie mix Pups

Looking for a foster for two-8 week old rottie mix pups.  Very cute babies-one girl and one boy.  Call me or Nev if you can help.

Pizza Man Night a Success!

The place was packed and the food great!  Thanks to Sue, Jennifer, Megan, Finessa, Connie, Dominic, and Nev for serving sodas, bussing tables and waiting on people.  We took in $235.00 in tips and will receive 10% of the sales.  They will let us know what that is shortly.  We also had a very wonderful donation from a great friend.  The food was really good and there was alot of pizza consumed.  Thanks to all who came to support P4P.

Winter Storm

Well this has been a fun week at the shelter.  With worries of the ice storm and snow coming there was a big concern about the power and how that would be managed.  A generator was available but luckily it was not needed.  Thanks to Lisa C who worked on getting that set up.  Mitch spent the night last night at the shelter in case no one could make it in.  Amy lives close and has a jeep so she came to help today.  Many thanks for their help in this big storm.  I'm ready for summer.  My real job was cancelled today which is the first time in 22 years that has happened.  And the reason for so many posts today.

Chuff

Chuff is a very cute pit/boxer mix pup about 6 months old.  He was an owner turn in at the shelter and developed parvo shortly after arriving.  We treated him and I'm glad to say that he is doing great.  He is back to his playful self and eating well.  Chuff will be ready for adoption this weekend.

Nuttles

We got a call last week that a dog had come into the Madison County Animal Control that had been attacked by two Akitas.  Nev headed down there and the poor boy was pretty torn up and blood was everywhere.  The two dogs had almost ripped a part of his private parts off.  Not pretty.  Nev thought he might have been protecting the momma dog that later had 11 babies at the pound.  They came in at the same time.  So an emergency surgery was done and basically he was neutered.  The other areas were stitched and cleaned.  Due to the nature of the injuries, the girls at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital named him Nuttles.  Thanks Christina!  He is doing well and is at the shelter.  IF anyone would like to foster the poor boy while he heals it would be appreciated.  He also has heartworms so as soon as he is up to it we will begin treatment.

Momma and 10 puppies

Nev visited the Madison County pound last week and a momma dog had just had 11 pups.  Her time was not up til Monday and they wouldn't let her take them early.  Bummer.  On Monday, Nev whisked them out of there and into the safety of a foster. One of the pups had died but the rest are doing well.  They think the daddy was Nuttles.    The mom and dad are boxer/pit mixes-very pretty dogs.

Update on Ragland

When Ragland was found he was limping so he got a trip to see Dr. Hall at Horseshoe Lake AH.  They found he had a broken pelvis most likely from being hit by a car.  So he is on cage rest for another 5 weeks.  So far he is doing fine and is expected to heal fine.  His appetite is still great.  After being starved he still thinks he is starving and eats like a piggy.  He has really plumped up.  If anyone is interested in fostering Rags while he recuperates please call Nev at the shelter at 618-540 PETS.

Weekly Stats

A good week for adoptions.  We adopted 6 kitties and 14 dogs.  The cats adopted were Brooke, Dalton, Theodore, Schmiglet, Dilly and DeeDee.  The dogs were Hawkeye, Mila and Nila, Journey, Bigsbee, Hunter, Julep, Christopher, Hokey, Ariel, Armstrong, Cinnamon, Ursula, and Shonee.  Six of the adoptions were done at the shelter so the word is getting out about the shelter.  Bigsbee's new family traveled a distance to get him and reports he is doing great.  Hunter got a great home after having several benign growths removed.  He looked a little Frankensteiny for a bit.  Cinnamon got a very nice home after almost dying on us due to a severe infection and heartworms.  She had the heartworm treatments and her cherry eye was  repaired.  She is tough little girl with the best personality.  The Spay/Neuter Clinic did 40 spay and neuters for the week. So all in all a good week.
